L’ENIGME FRANÇAISE

French piano visionary Lucas Debargue makes his Australian debut in a signature Live at Yours evening of imagination, artistry and freedom. Far more than a classical recital, this is an encounter with a musician who is thinker, essayist, improviser and jazz-explorer.

Born in Paris in 1990 and raised in Compiègne, Debargue came from a non-musical family and taught himself to read music before the age of ten. In his late teens he was working in a supermarket, having set the piano aside to play in a rock band while studying literature. After only a few years of formal classical training, he stunned the world at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition, winning the Critics’ Prize and launching an international career that defied all convention.

Today, Debargue brings to his playing intellectual depth, poetic insight and fearless creativity. He speaks of music as philosophy — repertoire as text — and draws inspiration from jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Bill Evans, turning improvisation into a natural extension of his voice.
